Choosing the Perfect Windows for Your Narrowboat

When it comes to designing your narrowboat, one of the most crucial decisions you'll face from an aesthetic perspective is your choice of windows. The choice between windows, portholes, or a combination of both, along with the style, can significantly impact the ambiance and functionality of your living space. In this post, we will explore the various options available, their benefits, and how to make the best choice for your narrowboat.

At Knights, we know that choosing the right type of window is not just about aesthetics—it’s also about practicality. We’ll help you make the best choice for your boat. Our standard practice includes fitting portholes in the bedroom and bathroom, typically in sizes of 15” or 18”. These smaller openings offer privacy while allowing natural light to filter in.

In contrast, larger hopper-type windows, usually measuring 30” x 21”, are commonly installed in the lounge, dinette, and galley areas. This combination provides a perfect balance of light and privacy throughout the boat, enhancing both comfort and style.

All windows are designed as full hoppers, meaning the glass unit can drop back for ventilation or be fully removed. This feature is essential for effective airflow, especially during warmer months. Additionally, in case of an emergency, these windows can serve as an escape route. If a glass pane breaks, a new inner pane can be supplied and easily swapped out without the need to remove the entire window, ensuring minimal disruption to your living space.

Finishes: Aesthetic and Durability

The finish of your windows is another important consideration. Options include plain aluminium or more durable finishes like bright or satin anodizing. For those looking for a more customised look, powder coating is available in a variety of colours. This finish not only enhances the visual appeal but is also easy to touch up if damaged by branches, feet, or other vessels.

Clip-In Windows

Clip–in windows are the industry standard design that are installed from the inside of the boat. They have no fixing holes and are attached with metal clips that screw against the body of the boat from the inside. These windows are manufactured with UK-supplied aluminium frames and toughened safety glass.

This style is available in Single-Glazed, Double-Glazed, or Double-Glazed with a Thermal Break.

Bonded Windows: A Modern Touch

For those seeking a sleek, contemporary look, bonded windows are an excellent choice. These windows feature aluminium frames and toughened safety glass, providing a modern aesthetic that can transform the appearance of your narrowboat. Designed with privacy in mind, the dark grey privacy glass (different levels of tint are available) allows for comfortable living conditions while still letting in ample light. This option is particularly appealing for those who want to maintain a stylish yet functional living space.

Positioning and Size Considerations

When deciding on the number and placement of windows and portholes, consider the layout of your narrowboat. The positioning should enhance both the interior and exterior views. For example, placing larger windows in the lounge area can create a bright and inviting atmosphere, while smaller portholes in the bedroom can provide privacy without sacrificing light.

The size of the windows is also crucial. Larger windows can make a small space feel more open and airy, while smaller portholes can add character and charm. It’s essential to strike a balance that suits your personal style and the overall design of your narrowboat.

Glazed Doors

Another key factor to consider is the glazing of doors. The bow doors feature glazing as standard. Additionally, choosing glazed rear doors could be a valuable investment, as they can enhance both the aesthetic appeal and functionality of the area.

Glazed side doors are also a favoured option, particularly when placed near the seating area. The combination of glazed and steel doors can achieve a balanced appearance, offering both light and security.

When making your decision, think about how each option aligns with your needs for visibility, light, and safety in your space.

Practical Tips for Choosing Windows

  1. Assess Your Needs: Consider how much natural light you want in each area of your boat. Think about privacy requirements, especially in bedrooms and bathrooms.

  2. Think About Ventilation: Ensure that your window choices allow for adequate airflow. Full hopper windows are particularly effective for this purpose.

  3. Consider Energy Efficiency: Double-glazed options can help maintain a comfortable temperature inside your boat, reducing heating costs in colder months.

  4. Choose Durable Finishes: Opt for finishes that will withstand the elements and require minimal maintenance over time.

Conclusion

Choosing the right windows for your narrowboat is a decision that will affect both the functionality and aesthetic appeal of your living space. By considering factors such as light, privacy, ventilation, and style, you can create a comfortable and inviting atmosphere that reflects your personal taste. Whether you opt for portholes, hopper windows, or a combination of both, we are here to help you make the right choice that will enhance your narrowboat experience for years to come.
